Fortnite completely changed the online gaming distribution scene when it brought hundreds of millions of gamers to the Epic Games store. The site's growth allowed almost unrivaled expansion in the past decade, until a pesky shooter with a free-to-play multiplayer came along in 2017.
It's got chat features and a new Steam news hub. The year after it launched, 2004, Steam released 7 games. Steam has been the most well-known gaming distribution site for over 10 years. The way it works varies from game to game, but the feature absolutely exists.
Games purchased from either site put their players in the same multiplayer servers. They're major competitors in that sense, but that doesn't stop the two sites from allowing players to play against each other.
